Project/Unit Description/Expedition:
Your new planet has passed Earth’s tests for a sustainable life- that means it is time for people to start moving to your planet from Earth! Before the spaceship of people arrive, you need to create a way for them to get around your planet. Just like we have cars, buses, trains and planes here on Earth, your planet needs to give people the ability to get around! Your MISSION is to create a new vehicle for your planet!
Today, students will continue to work on and finish their sculpture project- the last project of the semester. We will be writing and discussing with partners through an "Artist Interview" exercise that focuses students on their progress, and what is left for them to finish. The rest of the time is dedicated to work time, and getting ready for the exhibition!
Essential Understanding (s):
Inquiry/Learning Target:
Students will create a sculpture based on the design they created last class, using the recyclable materials and found objects provided.
Key Concepts:
Skills:
Art Focus:
Students will use their inspiration and designs from the previous class period to create a sculpture of a transportation vehicle for the planet they invented.
Literacy Focus:
Vocabulary:
Three Dimensional
Transportation (and how it compares to Earth’s transportation)
Form (3D) vs. Shape (2D)
Functionality (Does it actually work? How will it work in your world?)
Knowing and understanding the vocabulary above, written and verbal activities will be accomplished during class to show the students understanding of each concept and their expected outcome.

Documentation:
Today was our very last day to work with the students in the classroom; therefore our main focus was finishing our sculptures, so we spent the first part of the class period doing an "in-progress" critiques to help the students focus their avenue of creating and the rest of the class period focused on creating artwork.
The same recyclables had been brought in, but most of the students had their structures already assembled so it was time for adding the details. We also brought in a tub of random found objects, such as ribbon, steel scrubbers, yarn, felt, buttons, etc. This is where the students really dug in, and it created a mess once again!

This student is working hard to create an indestructible tank like vehicle. He had created a world with limited living space and a hostile environment, therefore a sturdy vehicle was necessary to get around his world safely. |

While working on attaching arms to his mode of transportation, this student explains the ins and outs of his "vehicle." This live vehicle has a few options, and this student has one way of getting around visible on his sculpture, Watch the video for the full description! |

This student payed close attention to detail with the construction and function of her carriage. The inside has a resemblance to a horse drawn carriage- with a bench, pillow and feather decoration that she had mentioned reminded her of the ocean. Her carriage is puled by a Pegasus, an animal that does not exist on our current planet we call home. Listen to the video to hear the student explain the function and details of her Pegasus drawn carriage. |
|
This student took inspiration from Monster High, an animated series, to create her Cat drawn carriage! She problem solved and innovated a way to display her cat with angel wings. While sitting stationary, you can see all aspects of her cat and carriage by making her cat lay flat. Watch the video to hear more about the flying cat, carriage and character of her new world! |
Throughout the class period, the hot glue stations were a hot commodity therefore students demonstrated patients by waiting for their classmates, teamwork by helping out one another through the attachment process and a positive vocabulary- partially to encourage their classmates on in the process, but also to possibly speed up the process to ensure they had enough time to use the hot glue for their own sculptures!
